The drive "was still showing in the BIOS" before it came out of the laptop, but in another machine "the drive will not spin up" and makes "a click/beep sound once every second or so". He had opened the case to check whether the heads were stuck on the platter, and reports that "which they aren't". The once-a-second rhythm is the drive attempting to start and failing, either at the motor or at the heads, and both answers live under a lid that is now open. That last part is the difficulty. A drive's interior is filtered, not sealed against a room, and household air carries far more than the mechanism tolerates.

The one-second beat is a start-up loop. A drive spins up, loads the heads onto the surface, tries to read its servo pattern and, on failing, retracts and starts again — and the interval between attempts is remarkably consistent, which is why people describe it as a beep or a tick rather than a rattle. Either the motor is not reaching speed or the heads cannot read once it does. Both are mechanical, and both live under the lid.
That it showed in the BIOS beforehand is genuinely useful. It says the fault is recent, and it means that shortly before this the drive was reading its own tables well enough to identify itself. Removing it did not cause that; drives are moved between machines constantly. What is more likely is that a drive already on its way out was disturbed, and the disturbance was enough.
The opened lid has to be addressed honestly, without making a meal of it. A hard drive is not sealed — it breathes through a filtered port — but the interior is kept clean by filtration and by the fact that nothing else gets in. Ordinary room air carries dust, skin, textile fibres and cooking residue, all of which are enormous compared with a head flying height measured in nanometres. Anything that settles on a platter and is then swept by a moving head becomes an abrasive. It does not make recovery impossible, and it is not something to feel foolish about — but it does mean the surfaces get examined under magnification before anything is spun, and it does mean the lid should stay shut next time.
It was not powered on further, given both the beat and the exposure. On a current-limited bench supply the current draw and spin-up behaviour were assessed, which separates a motor that will not turn from heads that will not read. It was then opened in filtered air under laminar flow, and the platter surfaces went under a stereo microscope specifically to look for particulate marking as well as for the original fault. The mechanism was addressed and matched donor heads fitted, then it was imaged out to DeepSpar with PC-3000 UDMA behind it and the files located and validated in R-Studio.
Mechanical fault dealt with in filtered air, the drive read out to an image, and the files handed back on fresh media. The diagnostic cost nothing; the figure that followed was fixed, written and inclusive of VAT. Opening the drive meant donor parts and clean-air time, so half the figure was payable before that stage with the balance due only on success. The surfaces had picked up a little from their outing, which was said at quote stage; the recovery was still substantially complete, which is the usual outcome when a lid has been off briefly rather than left open on a windowsill.
Please put the lid back on, and please do not take one off again. A hard drive breathes through a filter, and its heads fly nanometres above the surface — closer than a speck of dust is thick — so ordinary room air introduces particles that become abrasives the moment the platters turn. Looking inside cannot tell you anything a bench cannot tell you better, and it can turn a straightforward job into a partial one. As for the beat itself: a regular click or beep about once a second is a drive failing to complete its start-up, which is mechanical and needs clean air, matched donor parts and imaging equipment. It will not be helped by another cable, another machine or another try. Leave it unplugged and flat.
