A LaCie hard drive beeping once a second is a stalled motor, not a verdict, and a Rugged that went off the tailgate is ordinary work here. Inside every LaCie case is a standard Seagate or Toshiba mechanism, and that is what gets taken out and worked on.

LaCie kit is bought by people who carry it about, and carrying things about is what wears them out. These six account for nearly every LaCie hard drive failure that reaches the bench.
That is the spindle motor taking a run at starting and stalling, then going round again. Seized bearings or a head stack stuck to the platter cause almost all of it, and neither is an electrical problem. A different lead cannot free either one.
The orange bumper protects the corners of the case and does nothing whatever for the mechanism. Put one down hard while the platters are turning and the heads touch the surface, and every switch-on after that drags them a little further.
USB bridge boards, sockets and mains power circuitry all give out long before the disk they serve. A d2 or Porsche Design unit that is silent with no light showing is frequently nothing worse, and the disk comes out perfectly readable.
Some recent LaCie and Seagate portables carry the USB bridge on the drive's own circuit board instead of a separate card. There is no bare SATA disk to lift out and plug in on those, so the do-it-yourself route is closed and the drive is read through the interface it was built with.
The two-disk desktop units run as either RAID 0 or RAID 1. Set as RAID 0, one failed disk stops the volume dead, because half a stripe reassembles into nothing. Both disks have to come in whichever way it was configured.
The drive spins, the light behaves, and the machine asks to initialise the volume rather than opening it. That is a damaged file system on healthy hardware, it is logical work, and it is the one class here that sits under no fix, no fee.
A LaCie hard drive beeping is the least ambiguous noise in this trade. A platter stack has to reach full speed in a couple of seconds, and the beep is the spindle motor attempting exactly that, stalling, and trying again about a second later. Two mechanical causes account for nearly all of it. Either the spindle bearings have seized, which is common in a drive that has sat unused in a drawer for a year or in one that has taken a knock, or the head stack has settled onto the platter surface and stuck there, which is what a portable dropped while running usually does to itself.
Neither of those is electronics, and this is the part worth being blunt about: a different lead, a rear USB socket, a powered hub or a bigger supply cannot unstick a head or free a seized bearing. All another attempt does is ask a jammed mechanism to strain against itself. What does work is a clean bench. The shell comes off, the head stack is lifted clear with the proper tools, the mechanism is either freed or the platters are transferred to a donor body that turns as it should, and the drive is then imaged sector by sector so your files come off the copy rather than the patient.
Silence is a separate symptom and worth keeping apart from the beep. A mains-powered d2 or 2big showing no light, no sound and no beep at all has often lost nothing more than its power supply, and the disks behind it are untouched.
A LaCie that will not appear on the computer has failed in one of two places, and separating them is most of what the free diagnostic does. The first is the enclosure — the USB bridge board, the socket, or the mains circuitry on a desktop unit. The disk inside is in good health and the fault lies in the packaging around it, which makes for logical work at the cheaper end of the scale. The second is the mechanism itself: heads, motor, firmware or a spreading patch of bad sectors, all of which mean the clean bench, donor parts and the hours that go with them.
The first case is usually straightforward because a LaCie enclosure holds an entirely ordinary disk. The brand has belonged to Seagate for years, and behind the aluminium sits a standard Seagate or Toshiba mechanism that is worked on exactly as any other drive of that model would be. There is one honest exception, already noted above: where the bridge is built onto the drive's own board, no amount of unscrewing produces a plain SATA disk.
Nearly everyone who searches for LaCie hard drive repair, or types repair LaCie external hard drive into a search box, wants the contents rather than the container. Those are different jobs and it is fairer to say so. Nothing leaves this bench mended. Donor heads, a donor motor base and a matched board carrying the original firmware are fitted for one purpose, which is to make the mechanism readable long enough to be copied in full. What comes back to you is your data on fresh media; the original has usually done its last day of work, and it does not need to do another.
The Rugged is the orange-bumpered portable that goes out on site, lives in camera bags and gets dropped, and it arrives here damaged more often than anything else the brand makes; the Rugged SSD versions have nothing turning inside and fail the way solid state does, quietly and all at once. Porsche Design covers the plain brushed-aluminium units, the desktop drive and the mobile version of the same design, and those are the ones that most often turn up with a bridge fault and a healthy disk. The d2 is the single-disk mains desktop unit, heavy and quiet and generally years old before it says anything. The 2big carries two disks and can be configured either way, which matters enormously: as RAID 0 one dead disk takes the whole volume, and as RAID 1 the second disk still decides how much can be recovered, so both travel here together in either case. The older Blade and slimline mobile drives are 2.5-inch disks in a thin shell and click for the same ordinary reasons any 2.5-inch disk clicks.

Is the drive still bolted inside a laptop, desktop, MacBook, iMac, server or CCTV / DVR recorder? The hard drive or SSD needs to come out first, and only the bare drive travels — taking drives out of machines is not something we do here. Storage soldered to a motherboard (Apple Silicon Macs, one or two very thin laptops) is the single thing beyond us: if it will not come out, it cannot come in.
