A grey screen that goes nowhere, a folder with a question mark blinking in the middle of it, or a start-up chime followed by nothing whatever. An iMac behaving in any of those ways is nearly always still holding an intact photo library and a complete set of paperwork. What we recover is the removable storage inside them, whether that is one plain SATA disk or both components of a Fusion pair, for Apple owners across the city and the county.

The first job on any apple imac is matching the symptom to the fault — and after twenty-odd years, these thirty account for very nearly everything that comes through the door.
Nothing bootable found, which means either the internal drive has failed or its file system has come apart. Both recover. The folder icon is not able to tell you which one you have, and neither is anybody over the phone.
macOS sets off and does not get there, usually across a drive now reading at walking pace. It gets imaged before the walk becomes a standstill, because that is the direction of travel.
The SSD and the hard disk drift apart and the volume built across both dissolves. Each half is imaged on its own and the partnership is put back together in software afterwards.
Big-screen Macs of a certain age hide an ordinary 3.5-inch drive failing in an entirely ordinary way, just behind glued glass. Out it comes, and the data goes home.

Apple's file systems fail in Apple's own particular ways, and generic tools translate them badly. They get parsed natively here, which is the difference between a folder tree and a heap of fragments.

On a Fusion setup the SSD usually goes before the hard disk and strands the joint volume. Both are imaged and the union is rebuilt logically rather than by hopeful reassembly.
Credentials supplied, an encrypted APFS volume opens and rebuilds like any other. Write the password down and send it along; without it the answer is a short one.
An iMac that crawls is a disk expiring in stages. It gets captured while it will still answer, because that window really does close and it closes without warning.
Home surgery catches the SATA and power leads far more readily than it damages anything vital. The drive itself generally survives being liberated, whatever the glass looks like afterwards.
When a sick volume will not appear even there, one safe road remains: the drive comes out and gets imaged. There is no third option worth the risk.
Laptop-class disks inside the post-2012 slim machines spend years at temperature and age into bad sectors. Hardware imaging is the answer rather than patience, because patience is what caused it.
Boxed, driven, unboxed, and now ticking. Platters resent travel more than owners expect. Donor parts and filtered air conclude the argument.
Power lost mid-write leaves the file system's journal in shreds and the volume declining to mount. Rebuilt from a complete image, calmly, rather than by running repair tools at it.
Certain 3TB Seagates fitted in 2012 and 2013 carried a known defect and plenty of owners missed the replacement window entirely. It is a well-rehearsed job here by now.
Damp rooms fur up the SSD's edge contacts until it starts dropping offline intermittently and then permanently. Cleaned up, re-seated on our own adapters, and imaged.
APFS with no free space can neither start up nor repair itself, and the snapshots taking up the room will not leave voluntarily. Imaged whole and untangled at leisure.
Pre-APFS Fusion sits on Core Storage, and its metadata tears in ways the built-in disk utility will not even discuss. It gets restitched by hand from both halves.
A lost phone, a panicked remote wipe, and the iMac erased along with it. What survives depends on whether FileVault was on, and you will get that answer straight rather than gradually.
Failing RAM salts documents with corruption for months before anyone notices, and backups faithfully preserve the damage. Healthy drive, untrustworthy data. It gets audited rather than assumed.
The spindle bearing giving notice of its retirement. Not fatal yet and not fine either, and the sensible time to image it is while removing it is still a routine errand.
Upgrading an older machine converts the volume in place, and a power cut or a failing sector during that conversion leaves half the disk described one way and half the other. Nothing mounts and disk utilities make it worse. Both structures are read from an image and the newer one is followed to whatever it can still reach.
Apple ran a dedicated thermal sensor lead to the internal hard disk in several generations. When that cable frays the fans run flat out, the machine behaves as though the drive is dying, and the drive is in perfect health. It is worth ruling out before anybody replaces anything.
The new Mac was set up, the transfer looked finished, and the old machine was erased and sold. Then a folder turns out to be missing. What remains is on the old disk under the erase, and it is recoverable in proportion to how little has been written since.
With iCloud Photos set to optimise storage, full-resolution originals live in the cloud and the Mac keeps small previews. Lose access to the account, or have the library removed from it, and the local disk holds nothing but low-resolution copies. We recover what is genuinely on the disk and say clearly what is not.
A previous engineer replaced the hard disk, left the SSD out, and never rebuilt the logical volume. The remaining half now looks empty to everything that reads it, while it still holds the majority of the data. Rejoining the two in software is what puts it back.
An iMac hides its disk behind a display glued to the chassis, so reaching it takes a steady hand and a plastic tool, and that stage belongs to you rather than to us, because drives are not extracted from machines at this end. From the moment it arrives the work is ordinary: HFS+ and APFS both read natively, a clicking Apple disk goes to the clean bench like anything else, and a Fusion Drive is treated as the odd arrangement it is. One small SSD and one large hard disk are presented to macOS as a single volume, which sounds elegant right up until half of it fails and drags the other half down. Each device is copied separately, their pairing is put back together in software, and everything is read out of that reconstruction rather than off your originals.
It all comes down to whether the storage unplugs. An iMac from 2009 to 2011 with a 3.5-inch SATA disk: yes, gladly, and a surprising number are still in use. A Fusion-era machine with a blade sitting alongside a hard disk: also yes, and one of the commoner Apple jobs here. A T2-secured Intel iMac, or anything on Apple Silicon: no. On those the SSD forms part of the logic board itself, soldered down with hardware encryption over it, which welds the data to that one board — and soldered Apple work came off the service list roughly two years ago, once it was clear the proportion that succeeded was too small to charge anybody for in good conscience. One phone call establishes which model year you have, and it is the cheapest diagnostic on offer anywhere.

The two halves are imaged separately, rejoined in software, and the APFS or HFS+ volume standing above them rebuilt into ordinary files and folders.
Blades, Fusion pairs and plain SATA disks each connect natively into the imaging stack. Improvisation does not feature anywhere in the process.
A mechanical failure inside an iMac takes the same donor-head and firmware route as any other spinning drive in this building. Being Apple-branded changes nothing about the physics.
Both file systems parsed natively, with Fusion logical-volume reassembly included as standard rather than as an extra.
Encrypted volumes on removable drives open with whatever password you provide, and come back as plain readable folders. Without it, we say so at the diagnostic stage.
Volumes lost to one slip in Disk Utility, or to an update that failed, come back by carving, provided the freed space has stayed unwritten.
It comes down to one question: will the storage come out? SATA disks and Fusion pairs will, and the most dependable failure of that era is still the short-lived 1TB Seagates fitted between 2009 and 2011, for which donors stay permanently racked. On T2 and Apple Silicon machines the encrypted SSD is bonded into the logic board, so that work was retired here instead of being dressed up in odds nobody honest could quote. If you are not sure which you have, ring and describe the machine — the diagnostic is free and takes two working days once it arrives, but this particular question can usually be settled before anything is posted at all.
Most of what reaches this bench arrived by tracked, insured post. It is the steadiest way to move a poorly drive, and a parcel posted in Norfolk is usually on the bench the next working day.
Is the drive still bolted inside a laptop, desktop, MacBook, iMac, server or CCTV / DVR recorder? The hard drive or SSD needs to come out first, and only the bare drive travels — taking drives out of machines is not something we do here. Storage soldered to a motherboard (Apple Silicon Macs, one or two very thin laptops) is the single thing beyond us: if it will not come out, it cannot come in.
