There is a reason we ask what a drive sounds like before we ask anything else. A hard drive that is working is close to silent. A drive that clicks, ticks, chirps or grinds is telling you that the head assembly is trying to find a reference it cannot find, backing off, and trying again. After a fall, that is very nearly always what has happened: the impact has damaged or shifted the heads, and the drive can no longer read well enough to announce itself to the computer.
None of that says anything about the files. The platters are separate from the heads, and a drop that ruins the one frequently leaves the other untouched. What ruins the other is time under power.
