It is worth beginning by agreeing with him, because people who describe a fault accurately deserve to be told so. A clicking drive that has gone invisible to Windows has failed, and it has failed mechanically. The two symptoms are one symptom: heads that cannot read cannot fetch the drive's own identity, and without that identity there is nothing for Windows to display. It is not a driver, it is not a letter, and it is not the cable.
What that leaves is a fault in the mechanism sitting on top of an entirely undamaged set of pictures. This is the shape most of our external-drive work takes. The recorded layer is durable; the parts that hover over it a few nanometres up are not, and a knock, a fall or simple wear will finish them. The pictures do not know any of this has happened.

If you have already decided it has failed, you are almost certainly right, and the useful thing now is to stop testing that conclusion. Trying it on a second computer, or a third cable, keeps damaged heads travelling over the surfaces your pictures are written on, and each pass makes the eventual recovery smaller.
