Descriptions like this one are more useful to a bench than technical vocabulary would be. A drive that sounds as though something has shifted is a drive whose head assembly is no longer moving the way it was built to — bent, loose, out of alignment, or dragging where it should glide. It rarely sounds catastrophic. Most people describe it as not quite right, which is exactly the correct level of alarm.
The lack of recognition follows from it directly. Before any computer can list a drive, that drive must read the servo pattern and its own internal tables and report itself ready. Heads that are out of position cannot do that, so nothing is presented, and no amount of trying different machines will change it. One symptom, seen twice.
For the university work, the position is the ordinary one and it is better than it sounds. The data is written on the platters, and the platters are not what is out of place. What decides how much comes back is how much running the drive did after the noise started, because a misaligned head in contact with a moving surface removes recorded material rather than merely failing to read it. Trust the instinct.
