Engineers Mentioned the Actuator Arm

There is "a strange noise like a ticking" and he "can not anymore open my files". Engineers he had already spoken to suggested the trouble "should due to the actuator arm", and he wanted a second view before committing to anything. He is also clear that the drive itself is of no interest to him — only what is on it. The earlier opinion holds up: the ticking is the actuator swinging the head assembly across the platter, failing to find its reference, and swinging back to try again. The arm is generally not the broken part; what it carries is. The distinction matters only because it decides what gets replaced.

The actuator is the pivoting arm that swings the read heads across the platter, driven by a voice coil at the far end of it. When a drive ticks at a steady interval, what you are hearing is that arm being driven out, the heads failing to find the servo pattern that tells them where they are, and the arm parking and starting the sequence again. The regularity is the giveaway — a failing motor grinds or stalls, but a head fault ticks like a metronome.

So the previous opinion was right in substance if slightly loose in wording. The arm as a mechanical component is rarely the thing that has broken; the read elements it carries at the tip are, and they are replaced as an assembly along with the arm because nobody separates the two outside a factory. Calling it an actuator problem and calling it a head problem lead to exactly the same bench work, so there is no argument to be had.

Since the drive itself is of no interest to him, the plan is refreshingly simple. It is not repaired to a working state and it is not returned to service; it is opened in clean air, given a matched donor head assembly, read once, carefully, and then it can be scrapped. Everything after imaging happens on the copy. That is also why continued power matters so much beforehand — the ticking is not harmless, and heads that cannot read still touch the surface the files are written on.

It was not run on. On a current-limited bench supply the tick interval was characterised and the actuator and head stack examined, which confirmed the earlier opinion rather than contradicting it. It was opened beneath laminar flow, looked over under a stereo microscope, and a matched donor head assembly was fitted with the alignment set. Imaging ran on DeepSpar behind PC-3000 UDMA in controlled passes, and the files were traced in R-Studio and confirmed before going onto fresh media.

Head assembly replaced in filtered air, the drive read out to an image, and the files handed back on fresh media; the drive itself was not returned to service, which is what its owner wanted. The diagnostic cost nothing; the figure that followed was fixed, written and inclusive of VAT. Because the drive had to be opened, half of that was payable in advance against the donor assembly and clean-air time, with the remainder due only once the files were proven back. The second opinion agreed with the first, which is not always how these go, but is pleasant when it happens.

A ticking drive, and the actuator diagnosis

If somebody has told you the actuator is at fault, they are almost certainly reading the noise correctly — a steady tick is the head assembly being swung out, failing to find its bearings and going round again. Where the wording misleads slightly is that the arm itself is seldom broken; the read elements on the end of it are, and the whole assembly is replaced together. What matters far more than the terminology is what you do next. Do not power it up to demonstrate the noise to anyone, and do not let it run while you gather quotes, because heads that cannot read are still in contact with the surface your files are recorded on. Getting a second opinion is sensible; getting it on an unplugged drive is sensible and free.
