The LED No Longer Lights at All

The description covers all three symptoms at once: the "LED no longer lights when plugged in, there is no whirring and computers do not recognise in". It stopped working a couple of years ago, and there is a film collection on it. Complete silence is actually one of the more hopeful presentations, because it points at the power path rather than at anything touching the platters. No light means the enclosure's board is getting nothing or doing nothing. No whirring means the motor never receives what it needs. No recognition follows automatically from a drive that never spins. The mechanism has not failed; it has simply never been asked to start.

Three symptoms, one cause. The indicator light is driven by the enclosure's bridge board, so a dark LED usually means that board has failed or is receiving nothing. With no power passing through it, the drive's motor never turns, which accounts for the silence. And a drive that never spins never becomes ready, which accounts for the lack of recognition. Working backwards from all three lands squarely on the power path.

That is a considerably better place to be than clicking. Nothing in this fault has any contact with the platters — no heads dragging, no motor straining, no surface being worn away — so the films are sitting exactly where they were the day it stopped, and the two years since have changed nothing about them. Fixing the power path is electrical work, and the data is on the far side of it, untouched.

There are three plausible culprits and they are separated by measurement rather than by opinion. The enclosure's bridge board may have failed, in which case the drive inside is fine and can be read directly. The drive's own board may have lost its power section, often taking a protection component with it after a surge. Or a matched donor board may be needed, in which case this drive's own calibration chip has to be moved across so it runs on its own figures rather than somebody else's. The enclosure was opened and the drive tested directly on a current-limited bench supply, bypassing the bridge entirely, which is the quickest way to find out whether the enclosure or the drive is at fault. The board went under a stereo microscope at the same time so its power section and protection components could be examined. The fault was addressed with the drive's own calibration data kept where it belonged, then it was imaged out to DeepSpar with PC-3000 UDMA behind it and the films located in R-Studio and checked.

Power path repaired, the drive brought up safely, imaged, and the film collection written out to fresh media. The diagnostic cost nothing; the figure that followed was fixed, written and inclusive of VAT. Since this was electrical work on the board rather than logical work on the filing, 50% of the quote was payable in advance against components and bench time, with the remainder due only once the recovery was proven. Two years of sitting in a cupboard had cost the films precisely nothing.

A drive with no light, no sound and no recognition

Silence is not the worst news you can get from a drive — it is generally better news than clicking, because nothing in this fault touches the recording surface. It means power is not reaching the mechanism, and the culprit is the enclosure electronics, the drive's own power section or a protection component that sacrificed itself during a surge. Do try the obvious external things once: a different lead, a different port, and on a mains-powered unit a different power supply, since plug-top adaptors fail far more often than the drives they feed. Beyond that, stop. Do not open the case with a screwdriver, do not bridge anything on the board, and do not buy an identical drive to swap boards with, because modern boards carry per-drive calibration and a donor brings the wrong numbers with it.
