It's Sealed, So They Wouldn't Open It

He suspected "a mechanical fault", and described it accurately: the "light powers on but then turns off and is not discoverable by any pc". Somewhere else had already declined the job because the enclosure "is sealed so they refused". Sealed enclosures are ordinary. Manufacturers glue and clip these shells shut to save a few pence, not to make them impregnable, and opening one properly is a routine part of the work rather than an obstacle to it. A drive that lights up and then goes dark, with nothing appearing anywhere, has usually got power and then failed to become ready — which is a mechanical problem sitting behind a plastic case somebody would not open.

Start with the refusal, because it is the part that wasted his time. Modern portable enclosures are glued, clipped or ultrasonically welded shut, and there is no service seam because the manufacturer never intended anyone to open one. That is a cost decision, not a security measure. Opening one without damaging the drive inside takes the right tools and a little patience, and it is something a recovery bench does several times a week. A shop declining on those grounds is telling you about its own toolkit rather than about your drive.

The symptom itself is a familiar one. The light comes on because the enclosure's bridge board has power. It goes off again because the drive behind it never becomes ready — no servo read, no identity, nothing to hand up the chain — and the bridge gives up. Nothing is discoverable by any PC because there is nothing to discover; the drive has failed before the conversation begins.

His own suspicion of a mechanical fault fits the evidence, and it is the reason not to keep testing. If the mechanism is what has failed, every attempt to power it up is another chance for heads that are not reading to touch the surface. The sealed enclosure was opened along its seam without stressing the drive inside, and the drive was taken out and put on a current-limited bench supply, where the power-then-off behaviour could be measured rather than described. That separated an enclosure fault from a drive fault immediately. It was opened under a laminar-flow hood, the heads and motor examined under a stereo microscope, the mechanism addressed and matched donor heads fitted, then imaged using DeepSpar over a PC-3000 UDMA with the data validated before it went out.

Enclosure opened, mechanical fault dealt with in filtered air, the drive read out to an image, and the data handed back on fresh media. The diagnostic cost nothing; the figure that followed was fixed, written and inclusive of VAT. Because the drive had to be opened, half of that was payable in advance against donor parts and clean-air time with the balance falling due only on success. The sealed shell added a few minutes to the job and nothing at all to the price, which is roughly what a sealed shell ought to add.

A sealed drive somebody has refused to open

Being turned away because an enclosure is glued shut is not a verdict on your drive. Portable cases are sealed to save manufacturing cost, not to defeat anybody, and getting one open without damaging the mechanism inside is routine bench work. Do not attempt it yourself with a screwdriver and enthusiasm — the drive sits directly under the shell and levering in the wrong place is an efficient way to damage the very thing you are trying to reach. Meanwhile, if the light comes on and then goes off with nothing appearing anywhere, treat it as mechanical until proven otherwise and stop applying power.
