He would rather deal with the whole thing by email. A drive that has been dead for years is not a worse prospect than one that died last week; it is the same prospect, kept still. Whatever stopped it is what still stops it, unchanged. Magnetic recording does not fade on a shelf, and a drive that has been left alone has at least avoided the one thing that genuinely destroys data, which is somebody repeatedly trying to make it work. The most common reason people do not ask about an old dead drive is a quiet assumption that the data has somehow expired. It has not. A platter written in 2018 holds the same pattern in 2026, and flash in a stationary drive is not going anywhere either. The drive is not aging in any sense that matters to the photographs on it; it is simply broken, and it has been broken consistently.
There is even a modest advantage to the delay. The way most recoverable drives become unrecoverable is by being retried — plugged in every few months to see whether they have got better, run for an hour while somebody searches the internet, connected to yet another machine. A drive that went in a drawer and stayed there has been spared all of that. It arrives in the condition it failed in.
As for the earlier attempt, 'no luck fixing it' is a phrase that usually means somebody tried cables, enclosures and possibly software and got nowhere, which is the normal outcome for a genuinely dead drive and no reflection on them. A dead drive has three families of cause: the enclosure's power path or bridge, the drive's own board, or the mechanism.
