Apple's Presence Test Can't Find the Drive

Apple's own diagnostics report that the "internal drive is not detected", having "failed to pass the presence test". The machine is an early-2015 MacBook Pro, an A1502, and it carries five years of university work that exists nowhere else. A presence test is a very simple question — does the storage answer when the logic board calls it — and a failure means only that it did not. That can be the module's controller, its connector or the board's own storage link, and none of those tell you anything about the data. This vintage takes a removable SSD blade, which is the detail that makes it workable: the module unclips and is read on its own, away from a machine that has stopped speaking to it.

Apple Hardware Test and Apple Diagnostics are blunt instruments by design, and the presence test is the bluntest part of them. It calls out to the storage and notes whether anything replies. A pass means the module is alive and talking. A fail means silence, and silence has several causes: a module whose own controller has stopped responding, a connector that has worked loose or corroded, or a fault on the logic board's storage link. The test cannot tell those apart, and it makes no claim about the data either way.

The important thing about an early-2015 Retina MacBook Pro is that its storage is a removable blade on a proprietary Apple connector rather than flash soldered to the board. That single fact is what makes this a job rather than a regretful phone call. The module comes out, and it can then be addressed directly on a bench without the machine's cooperation — which matters enormously when the machine has stopped cooperating.

It is worth saying where the line falls, because Mac owners are entitled to know before they post anything. From 2018 onwards Apple soldered the flash to the logic board and bound it to the machine's own security hardware. We do not take that work on, and we would rather tell you on the phone than take a parcel and disappoint you. On this generation, with the module out and its Apple encryption resolved using the machine's own keys, the work is straightforward and the five years of coursework are reachable.

The blade was removed from the machine and connected on its own behind a write-blocker, at which point it responded — which put the earlier silence down to the connection rather than the module itself. It was imaged using DeepSpar with the Apple encryption resolved using the machine's keys, the filesystem taken apart in R-Studio, and the coursework, notes and project files opened and checked before anything went onto fresh media. Nothing was written back to the module at any stage.

Module read directly, imaged, and five years of university work written out to fresh media. The diagnostic cost nothing, and the figure that followed was fixed, written and inclusive of VAT. This one resolved without the flash needing to be worked at chip level, so it ran on no fix, no fee terms — had the module's own controller been dead and the memory needed reading directly, half the quote would have been payable in advance against parts and bench time, and that would have been quoted before the work rather than added afterwards.

A Mac whose drive fails the presence test

A presence-test failure is not a verdict on your data; it only reports that the storage did not answer, and the reason for the silence might be a connector rather than the module. Do not keep restarting the machine, and do not let anyone reinstall macOS over the top to see whether that helps — a reinstall on storage that is intermittently responding is an efficient way to lose the very files you are trying to reach. The decisive question is the age of the machine. On models up to roughly 2017 the storage is a removable drive or blade and can be read on its own, whatever the rest of the machine is doing. From 2018 onward the flash is soldered to the logic board, and that is outside what we take — worth establishing on the phone before anything is packed.
